China is so often thought of as the World’s Factory, it’s easy to forget they’re also a major, and growing, global purchasing force; producing all those inexpensive products and items of clothing has swelled their income by amounts that might seem small to wealthy Western nations, but would have been unimaginable to the Chinese citizen of two generations ago. Japan, on the other hand, is largely recognized as producing sophisticated, high-quality, relatively expensive goods.

On August 12, 2010 By

Highlights from the IDSA 2010 Conference The Industrial Design Society of America held it’s annual conference in Portland last week. The office building located near Toulouse in France, is a project by Studio Bellencour Architects . A work with an amazing composition, use of shapes and materials! Bellencour Architects managed to join the straight and hard lines of two office buildings with a layer of concrete so light that looks more like paper.

Here at Design*Sponge, we have not even attempted to mask our crush on event designer and planner, David Stark! (Just for starters, see his in the kitchen with recipe , his diy interview/video , and this fun diy post-it project ) His fresh approach to design is equal measures clever innovation and cheeky wit. He can successfully transition from creating elaborately elegant environments with high-profile clients, to repurposing the humble post-it into a work of art.

The Stalb Lamp

On August 11, 2010 By

There’s an austere aesthetic to the Stabl Lamp by Kassen. It blends biomorphic design elements with “brutalist principles in steadfast materials.” Indeed the mix of steel, curved to soften the effect, stands out on its concrete base. Topped with a simple hollow plywood block, one could say the design is at equilibrium.
