lauren nelson is a prop stylist and interior designer who dabbles with art and currently lives in cambridge, massachusetts with her fiancé gabe. the two moved to massachusetts from california with nothing but their clothes, bikes, books and a handful of things they just couldn’t live without (quite opposite to the life of a prop stylist who makes a living collecting things).

[ Filed under Urban Design or in the Architecture category ] Taking layout lessons from the mistakes of unplanned city development, this multi-unit housing complex is a unique attempt to combine genuine community spaces with private residences – custom-planned apartments with shared green space but room to breath as well, all on large plot of land. There is an organic way in which urban density leads to developments that may never have been designed for those living within them – from accidental single-family home-to-apartment adaptations to intentional but cookie-cutter stacked modular housing situations. In India, Anagram Architects (images by Asim Waqif) has anticipated the paradigm and designed something to respond in advance of inevitable suburban sprawl on the edge of a major city

diy project: sisal rope art

On June 2, 2010 By

i just returned home after a day at the beach, and i am very excited for summer projects! i know a lot of people find the ‘nautical’ theme to be a little tired, but after skimming over some highlights in nautical inspiration, i now understand why it comes around in fashion and interiors every summer: the visual combination of crisp whites and blues with rough organic materials is just inescapably appealing. so i am going to try to bring some fresh eyes to nautical design for our july diy projects. i started playing around with sisal rope, which is incredibly cheap, and after a couple coiled circles, it just grew from there into this beautiful piece of art for my wall

For years I have collected wooden thread spools, picking them up here and there, mostly at yard sales. You can’t usually use the actual thread, if there is any left, because it has become brittle with age. So, aside from displaying them in glass jars I wanted to put them to good use.
