summer is in full swing, and yet here in the bay area i’m wearing a sweater and wool socks…go figure. but when the fog burns off and i head outside later, i might have to pick up some materials to make these adorable pots. bonnie from going home to roost has kindly included the templates for these charming labels, and the great part about this simple project is you don’t have to stop at pots! i can see these cute chalkboard labels on old jars, crates, and storage boxes.

Dine On Plastic. It’s Fantastic.

On August 2, 2010 By

While the world witnessed Plastiki’s journey from San Francisco to Sydney, Vancouver has been hosting visitors on the world’s first floating dining room. This elegant raft sits on top of 1700 plastic bottles, which are set in a frame made from reclaimed pinewood.

You know Heelys, those sneakers with the wheel in the heel that you see kids zooming around on? Starting this month, the company is broadening their product horizons with a new category: A removeable “footboard.” Called the Nano Inline Footboard , the detachable device is not quite a skateboard, not quite a scooter, not quite inline skates. The Nano is designed to correspond with a mating system built into Heelys shoes: by what we can gather from the drawings, it clicks into a cavity left by removing the Heelys wheel in one shoe

“We replaced an injection-molded plastic and metal assembly with a composite design and achieved significant part consolidation and weight savings,” is one of those sentences that, when uttered at a gathering, will cause an industrial designer’s ears to prick up while others slink away in search of more fruitful conversation. Those are the words of Pat McAllister of Commercial Vehicle Group , an Ohio-based company tasked with redesigning overhead storage cabinets in trailer-truck sleeper compartments–nuts-and-bolts ID that, while it won’t make an appearance at the Salone, is the bread and butter of many a workaday industrial designer. An article in the sexily-named Composites World discusses the project in-depth, covering manufacturing, tooling and materials details concerning IVCR (Improved Vinyl Clad Rigid) and RIM (Reaction Injection Molding).

Floating on Clean Air

On August 2, 2010 By

In an effort to bring the environmental movement above the clouds, Thomas Tzortzi’s designed an airship for the world. Tzortzi concentrated on the culture of tourism prevalent throughout the entire world, airplanes rocking and rolling above the stratus, creating what’s undoubtedly an unnecessary pollution.

[ By Steve in Architecture & Design , Gadgets & Geek Art , Urban & Street Art . ] All praise the zipper: the ubiquitous, maintenance-free, no muss, no fuss fastener that trumps both buttons and Velcro! Zippers operate smoothly, silently and safely day in and day out, often in close proximity to our most sensitive bodily parts yet they rarely – “There’s Something About Mary” excepted – cause us anxiety or grief. These 10 toothy examples of zany zipper art illustrate the mix of appreciation, admiration and YKK-stamped tabs by which society holds these fascinating fasteners.
