Here’s some seri­ously behind-the-scenes indus­trial design stuff: A com­pany called IndexSAR , which spe­cial­izes in test­ing out wire­less sys­tems, needed a model of a human hand to stick a cell phone into. For the pur­poses of their test­ing para­me­ters, it was deter­mined that the hand model needed to be made out of car­bon black, a mate­r­ial that absorbs radio waves put out by cell phones. The prob­lem with this, as described by Vince O’Horo, Direc­tor of Indus­trial Design Consultancy’s mod­el­mak­ing branch : “Car­bon black is a dif­fi­cult sub­stance to work with.

The IDSA has released some more infor­ma­tion about their upcom­ing 2010 con­fer­ence (August 4–7) and its DIY theme. They’ve have six dicus­sion topic themes all explor­ing the link between DIY and indus­trial design: Enabling Tech­nolo­gies The rise and spread of tech­nolo­gies that enable indi­vid­u­als to design and cre­ate with a scale and sophis­ti­ca­tion once avail­able only to corporations.
