High-Tech Hybrid: Hanging Lights + Digital Photo Frames

fb83f1106elight.jpg High Tech Hybrid: Hanging Lights + Digital Photo Frames

Suspended like modern chandeliers, these multi-sized lighting designs combine the technology of a digital photograph frame with the multi-directional light supplied by a more typical fixture. The result: an elegant mix of dynamic memories and useful lights. The small size features two circles composed of six frames, each storing a gigabyte of photographic (or other image) material that can be displayed as a static series of rotating set of visuals.

Crazy FLIP ship designed to change its orientation–from horizontal to vertical

86440017f2ipship.jpg Crazy FLIP ship designed to change its orientation from horizontal to vertical

This has got to be the weirdest oceangoing vessel I’ve ever seen: The FLIP (Floating Instrument Platform) was a ship apparently built in 1962 as a research platform. After being towed to its target site in a horizontal, normal ship position, ballast tanks begin taking on water–and the ship pivots 90 degrees, sending the bow some 300 feet below the surface, while the tail end rides above the waves, bristling with cranes presumably used to lower equipment. Why the pivot

Shadow Cubes: 3D Art of Augmented Reality Architecture

Forget designer explanations and architectural theory for a moment, skip augmented-reality buzz-art and over-hypedAR gaming … then take a look at the ‘reality’ on the ‘ground’ as it is: move around this series of white cubes and create your own shadowy wonderland at the intersection of art and architecture. This light table looks like it is somehow casting shadows, and the result is an interactive illusion that puts you in the design-driving seat. Shadow-puppet structures emerge as you move around the blank boxes

Solutions for saving a wet cell phone: The Dryer Box machine, or plain ol’ rice

Two places where I will never touch my cell phone: In a bathroom and at the edge of the subway platform. I’ve heard too many tales of people dropping their mobiles onto the tracks or into the toilet, and I’d rather wait until I’m well clear of either of those environments before checking voicemail or sending a text. For the bathroom-butterfingers among us, a Japanese company called JMC Risk Solutions has invented a ” Dryer Box ” that will reportedly remove the moisture from a soaked phone, restoring it to life in about 30 minutes.

In an answer to the ongoing debate about whether next generation television will be powered by the internet or existing television infrastructure, Irish design studio Notion have proposed MetaMirror , a vision of living room media that combines broadcasting technologies with the power of metadata, streamed via the internet to smart, handheld devices and superimposed over the existing image. Developments in IPTV, the ubiquity capacitative touch sensitivity, and advancements in smart object recognition are cited as driving technologies. The context photo above, depicting a very familiar scene of screens upon screens , convinced us that this idea (or a version of it) is not so far fetched at all
